Preparing Your Home for Painters: A Quick Checklist for West Sussex Homeowners

A successful painting and decorating project depends on more than just a skilled painter. A bit of preparation before the team arrives can make the whole process smoother, faster and cleaner. Here is a simple checklist we recommend to homeowners across Worthing, Brighton, Hove and the wider West Sussex area before any painting work begins.

Clear the Room as Much as Possible

Move smaller furniture, ornaments and wall hangings out of the room if you can. For larger furniture that cannot be moved, your painters will usually shift it to the centre of the room and cover it, but the less there is to work around, the faster and tidier the job will be.

Take Down Curtains, Blinds and Wall Art

Removing curtains, blinds, mirrors and framed pictures in advance avoids any risk of damage and saves time on the day. It also gives your painters a completely clear wall to work with, which usually results in a neater finish.

Note Any Repairs You Want Addressing

If there are cracks, holes, peeling wallpaper or damp patches you want dealt with before painting, make a list and mention it when you book your quote. Sorting this in advance means it can be factored into the timeline and cost from the start, rather than being a surprise on the day.

Decide on Your Colours and Finishes in Advance

Try to finalise your paint colours and finishes before the job starts. Last minute colour changes can delay a project, particularly if a colour needs to be specially mixed or ordered. If you are unsure, ask your painter and decorator for sample pots so you can test colours on your own walls first.

Plan for Pets and Children

Painting involves strong smells, open paint tins and wet surfaces, so it is worth thinking about where pets and young children will be during the work, especially on the first day of a job when most of the prep and initial coats happen.

Clear Access to the Property

Make sure there is reasonably easy access to the rooms being painted, including parking nearby if your painters need to bring in equipment, sheets or extra materials. This is particularly relevant for homes in busier parts of Worthing, Brighton and Hove where parking can be limited.

Ask Questions Before the Job Starts

A good painter and decorator will always be happy to talk through the process, timeline and what to expect. If anything is unclear, it is always worth asking before work begins rather than partway through.
